How to Light a Store Window Display: A Retail Window Lighting Guide
A store window is the first point of contact with a potential customer. A well-lit window display catches the eye of passers-by, draws them in and shows products at their most appealing. Here is everything you need for effective window display lighting.
How Many Lux Does a Window Display Need?
1,000–2,000 lux of background illumination inside the window and 3,000–5,000 lux of intense spot light on featured products is recommended. That contrast makes the product visually prominent to viewers.
Display lighting should be especially powerful during daylight hours when outdoor brightness is high.
CRI, Colour Temperature and Angle
If you want the colour and texture of window products to appear true to life, CRI ≥ 90 is non-negotiable. CRI 95 and above is preferred for fashion, jewellery and cosmetics.
Choose beam angle by product size: 15–25° narrow for a single object or mannequin, 36–45° medium for a shelf or a wider display area.
Flexible Window Staging with Magnetic Track
Window layouts change frequently with seasons and campaigns. A magnetic track system lets spot fixtures be repositioned screwlessly, eliminating remounting and remodelling with every change.
By mixing spot and linear fixtures with different beam angles on the same track, you can build a background + accent combination.
Frequently Asked Questions
How should colour temperature be chosen for a window display?
3000K warm white creates an inviting atmosphere for fashion and home décor; 4000K natural white improves colour accuracy for jewellery and watches.
Magnetic track or classic spot track for a window?
If the display changes frequently, magnetic track (48V) is far more practical — fixtures reposition in seconds.
