How to Choose a Recessed Downlight: A Complete Guide

Recessed downlights sit flush with the ceiling for a clean, modern look and are among the most popular fixture types in home, office, store and hotel projects. Here are the key criteria for choosing the right downlight.

Cut-Out Size and Body Dimensions

Every downlight requires a specific cut-out diameter in the ceiling. If mounting into an existing hole, check that measurement first; for a new installation, choose the size based on the spot scale you want.

Common cut-out diameters are 55 mm, 75 mm, 95 mm and 120 mm. The ceiling void depth must also accommodate the fixture body height.

CRI, Colour Temperature and Beam Angle

For colour accuracy, prefer CRI ≥ 90; in sensitive applications like cosmetics, fashion and hotels, CRI ≥ 95 is ideal. For colour temperature: 2700–3000K warm white for homes and hotels, 4000K natural white for offices.

Beam angle determines the purpose: 15–24° narrow (accent), 36–45° medium (mixed general/accent), 60°+ wide (general lighting).

IP Rating and Dimmability

In bathrooms and damp areas, choose a downlight rated at least IP44 (preferably IP65). For dimmable models, confirm the driver is also dimmable and compatible with your dimming system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a recessed and a surface-mounted downlight?

A recessed downlight is set into the ceiling so its face sits flush with the surface. A surface-mounted model is for ceilings with no void — the body protrudes below the ceiling.

What is the minimum ceiling depth needed for a downlight?

It varies by product; typically 80–150 mm of void is sufficient. Check the 'mounting depth' value on the product page.
